400 rules

How Kemlet scores 400: every player bids and scores alone, and a team adds up its two players.

Bidding

  • Each player bids from 2 to 13 tricks.
  • A player's minimum bid follows their own score; the minimum total follows the highest score at the table.
  • If the four bids add up to less than the minimum, the hand is redealt.
Score Minimum bid Minimum total
Under 30 2 11
30 to 39 3 12
40 to 49 4 13
50 and up 5 14

Bid values

  • The column follows the player's own score before the hand: under 30, or 30 and up.
Bid Under 30 30 and up
2 2 2
3 3 3
4 4 4
5 10 5
6 12 6
7 14 14
8 16 16
9 27 27
10 40 40
11 40 40
12 40 40
13 40 40

Scoring

  • Take at least as many tricks as you bid and you win its value.
  • Fall short and the same value is taken off.
  • Extra tricks add nothing.
  • For example, bid 9 under 30 wins 27 or loses 27.
  • A team's score is its two players' scores added up.

Winning

  • A team wins when one of its players reaches 41 or more and the partner is above 0.
  • If both teams get there on the same hand, the higher team total wins; a tie plays another hand.
